People will now think carefully before they opt for any cool and sweet drink in the hot weather after a study revealed that drinks with sugar are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and can cause death in some cases, USA Today reported.

After studying more than 12,000 participants with Type 2 diabetes, researchers from Harvard TH Chan School of Public analyzed their sugar consumption.

According to their study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal The BMJ, Type 2 diabetic individuals who regularly consumed sweet beverages had a higher chance of developing heart disease.

They also disclosed that, in contrast to individuals who drank other beverages, they might possibly pass away before reaching adulthood.

Over 37 million Americans have diabetes, and it's thought that up to 95% of them have Type 2 diabetes, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Controlled sugar intake

The study's authors said that it was one of the first extensive studies to look at associations between Type 2 diabetes patients' mortality or disease and beverages and that it contained data from 1980 to 2018.

The findings cover both caffeinated and caffeine-free colas as well as fruit punches, lemonades, and fruit drinks like grapefruit, orange, and apple.

According to the study, drinking these beverages while having type 2 diabetes can bring the risk of death from all causes up to 8%.

However, the study also suggested that daily sugar consumption be limited to less than 10% of caloric intake, or around 50 grams, according to Nestle.

Substitute to sugar

According to the study, choosing artificial sweeteners can reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease to between 8% and 15%.

However, other studies had voiced their reservations about sugar substitutes. Although they are deemed safe by federal health authorities, they are not considered to be wholesome foods. In addition, long-term health effects may occur if sugar substitutes are not yet fully understood.

Drinks other than sugar content

Researchers discovered that substituting coffee, tea, low-fat cow's milk, or plain water for one serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage is healthful.

The following beverages reduce the risk of death from all causes:

18% for coffee

• 16% for tea

• 12% for low-fat cow's milk

• 16% for plain water

The following drinks are recommended by researchers to lower the risk of death by heart disease:

• 20% with coffee

• 24% with tea

• 19% with low-fat cow's milk

• 20% with plain water

Lead author of the study and associated professor in the Department of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health Qi Sun said: "People living with diabetes should be picky about how they keep themselves hydrated. Switching from sugar-sweetened beverages to healthier beverages will bring health benefits."
